Global Children’s NCDs
“The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our healthcare system, economy, and day-to-day lives are evident all around us. The virus has caused a substantial human and socio-economic toll and resulted in extraordinary demands on health care systems all around the world. In order to combat the pandemic, multiple nations have restricted the services that their healthcare systems offer to their population. As a result, there has been significant disruption to routine services, including children cancer services. Childhood cancers are the second leading cause of non-communicable disease deaths for paediatric patients around the world. More than 90% of these deaths occur in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). At present, there is little data available to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global children cancer services and the subsequent impact on outcomes for children with cancer. To have a better understanding of this issue, we are launching an international, multi-centre study to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on paediatric cancer services and their outcomes globally. The study includes representations from a number of international collaborative networks such as The International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), the International Society of Paediatric Surgical Oncology (IPSO), Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS) and the Oxford Global Paediatric Cancer Network. The day-to-day operational element of the study will be facilitated by the Global Children NCDs group based at the University of Oxford. The study, in essence, will examine the changes that may have occurred to paediatric cancer management and the factors that have driven this change. Furthermore, we hope to examine the medium and long term effect of the pandemic on childhood cancer outcomes globally.
All doctors/students are welcome to collaborate, learn, be co-authors and join the study working group. It is our intention that all individuals who contribute to this study to be given collaborative authorship on any publications generated from this study.
If you are interested in partaking in this study on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the management of paediatric cancers as a collaborator with data elements of the study or acts as a hospital/regional/country lead, could we ask you all to fill in this form.
Please feel free to share these opportunities with your networks and feel free to invite others to this WhatsApp group.
We look forward to working with you all.
The members of the steering committee are: Mr Noel Peter, Dr Soham Bandyopadhyay, Mr Benjamin Martin, Mr Max Pachl, Dr Shaun Wilson, Dr Abdelhafeez Abdelhafeez, Professor Simone de Campos Vieira Abib, and Professor Kokila Lakhoo.”
