Lancet Article – Addressing paediatric surgical care on World Birth Defects Day

As World Birth Defects Day comes upon us on this 3rd March, we reflect on the burden of disease posed by congenital anomalies throughout the globe.

Birth defects have risen to become the fifth leading cause of death in children under 5 years of age, with an estimated two-thirds of the burden being amenable to surgical care.

We therefore highlight the importance of not just developing surgical systems worldwide, but ensuring the inclusion of children’s surgery in this global movement.
